General Story
In the twelfth century, Queen Tamar ascended to rule the Kingdom of Georgia in the heart of the Caucasus. Though a woman in an age of iron and tradition, her people bestowed upon her the title of “King” — Mepe — a testament to the authority she commanded. Through masterful statecraft and unyielding resolve, she forged a fractured realm into a formidable empire stretching from the shores of the Black Sea to the banks of the Caspian.
Her reign was not won without struggle. Defiant nobles questioned her legitimacy, and her deposed first husband — the Rus’ prince Yury — twice raised arms to reclaim what he had lost. Tamar crushed both rebellions without mercy, then consolidated her power through a calculated union with the Alan prince David Soslan: a devoted consort and a commander of exceptional talent.
Foreign powers, too, would come to test her mettle. When the Sultanate of Rum marched upon Georgia with a vast and overwhelming host, Tamar sought divine favor — praying barefoot at the cave monastery of Vardzia — before dispatching her armies to meet the enemy. Exploiting the rugged Caucasus terrain with ruthless precision, Georgian forces shattered the invaders at the Battle of Basiani through a devastating flanking maneuver.
Yet Tamar’s legacy was not written by the sword alone. She extended Georgia’s reach over Trebizond, championed sweeping legal reforms, and — in a gesture of remarkable humanity — abolished both torture and the death penalty across her realm. Under her patronage, Georgian art, literature, and culture flourished as never before, ushering in a Golden Age that would echo through the centuries — an era forever remembered under the reign of the “King of Kings and Queen of Queens.”
