Babur’s General Story

When Babur inherited the throne of Fergana at just 12, surrounded by powerful enemies, even his most loyal followers could scarcely have imagined that this repeatedly exiled young ruler — forced time and again to fight alone — would one day lay the foundations for three centuries of Mughal dominion over the Indian subcontinent.

Exile and defeat marked his early years. Inspired by his ancestor Timur, he captured Samarkand three times, only to lose it to more powerful rivals. Reaching his lowest point in the Hindu Kush with only a few loyal troops, he accepted that his homeland could no longer sustain his ambitions and turned his eyes toward the riches of India.

Allies shifted and enemies changed sides, but Babur’s hard-won military genius and iron will never wavered.
