General’s Story
In 197 AD, the armies of Roman Emperor Septimius Severus clashed with the forces of the Roman usurper Clodius Albinus at Lugdunum. This battle is considered the largest, most hard-fought, and bloodiest among all Roman civil wars. The tide shifted several times during the fight, with the outcome hanging in the balance. Severus had the advantage in cavalry, which ultimately swung the battle in his favor. Exhausted and bloodied, Albinus’s army was crushed. After the Year of the Five Emperors, Severus emerged as the victor and founded the Severan dynasty.
