Tishtrya’s General Story

Tishtrya is the god of rain and stars in the Avesta, whose celestial counterpart is Sirius. Created by Ahura Mazda, he is the most illustrious and powerful among the stars, embodying light, abundance, and life, standing as a bulwark against drought.

In the Tishtar Yasht, he is celebrated in three forms: during the first ten days as a graceful youth, the middle ten days as a golden-horned bull, and the final ten days as a pure white horse. In each form, he traverses the earth, drawing forth the sacred waters of the cosmic sea. The faithful invoke his name through hymns, and only through proper sacrifice and praise can they empower him to vanquish darkness.

The confrontation between Tishtrya and the drought demon Apaosha is among the most compelling battles in these myths. Descending upon the sacred sea as a white horse with a golden mane, Tishtrya faces Apaosha, who assumes the form of a hideous black horse to oppose him. They clash for three days and nights; initially, Tishtrya is driven back, weakened by insufficient sacrifices. After Ahura Mazda himself offers a sacrifice, Tishtrya returns with thunderous might, defeats Apaosha, and churns the sacred sea into clouds that unleash life-giving rain.

The pinnacle of Tishtrya’s veneration is celebrated in the Persian calendar on Tīr Day of the month of Tīr, named in his honor. On this festival, people gather by the water, playfully splash one another, recite the Tishtar Yasht, and pray for abundant harvests and relief from heat. From the starry sky, Sirius, the rain-bringer, is said to watch eternally over the prosperity and peace of Eran’s lands.
